Fairview celebrates Oklahoma's Centennial

Happy Birthday, Oklahoma!!!

Fairview's statehood Centennial committee builds the state's largest birthday cake on a frame of wood wrapped in plastic. Working on the wrap are (from left) Susan Smith, Melissa Mainord, Butch Edingfield and Eva Martens.

Barbara Sides, one of the Centennial committee members, spreads icing on the statehood birthday cake. The cake was made up of over 300 individual 8X12 cakes baked by over 75 cooks throughout the county. The cakes were frozen until delivered to downtown Fairview Saturday afternoon.

Lori and Joyce Martens listen while Braxton Keen tells about A.J. Bowers, the historic Fairview character he was portraying as part of the Cornelsen Elementary School Wax Museum. This year, the museum was moved to the Fairview Municipal Complex where the students took stations in the library, community room and hall. More than 40 fifth-graders took part in the project.

Tina Case and Bill Benson were serving up the chili and stew at Farmers & Merchants National Bank's annual community supper Saturday in Blackledge Auditorium. The bank puts on the annual feed as its way of thanking the the people of the community for their business.

Susie Martens (in the white blouse), owner of Kidd Drug, visits with customers during the retail merchants' open house Saturday night. The merchants offered tax-free shopping and cash drawings to go along with the other festivities downtown.
